Konark Dance School was founded by Jayantee Paine-Ganguly in 1998 in
Virginia and Maryland. Konark's mission is to offer training in Indian
classical dance styles and to spread knowledge and awareness of Indian culture. The
school offers classes to students of all ages in Odissi, Kathak, and
Mohiniyattam. Members of Konark also perform frequently in the greater Washington, D.C., area through the school’s affiliated dance
troupe, Jayantika Dance Company.
The
dance school's name comes from the ancient sun temple of Konark, which
is built in the shape of a chariot, and features an enormous dance hall
upon which are carved numerous sculptures of dancers.
